Illum has been contracted by Anthony Gallippi, owner of Bit-Pay, to produce a 60 second animated commercial spot for their venture into Bit Coins. Bit-Pay was founded last year by Anthony & his partner Stephen in hopes of enabling online merchants to accept bitcoins as easily as accepting credit cards or paypal payments. Bitcoins are a form of digital currency that companies can use for purchasing anything they can imagine. Bitcoin usage can eleminate identity theft, chargebacks & fraud & since there are no bank fees associated with Bitcoins, they are considerably less to utilize.

Jerry, our creative director, explains the process Illum took with this production. “Bit-Pay wanted a simplistic approach to the design & movement of the production. After going through several design ideas, we created an over-lapping construction paper cutout design with a stop motion style of movement. The look is very organic as though someone cut, by hand, several pieces of colored paper & glued them to one another. The effect would be this stacked style of art that has depth to it. Then we animated the sequences at 12 fps to get a choppy feel to the animation as if we were shooting it 1 frame at a time with a still camera. Depending on the complexity of the shot, each scene could have 30 to 300 assets per shot so even though the final result seems very simplistic, the fact is the production was very complex.”

The commercial will be airing on several commerce sites as well as an independent website created just for the spot. You can check it out on Bit-Pay’s created site, http://screwbanks.net, Youtube under “Screw Banks” or at illum’s vimeo company page:
