The Boys in the Big Apple

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Joe Merideth, animation director & I toyed with going to New York to see our animation in the Broadway musical, 9 to 5.  Conflicting schedules, costs, ho hum, etc.  Then I received an email from Andrew Bauer, Peter Nigrini’s right hand man, who asked, “Hey I have some tickets, would you like to come see the show?”  “Well yes we would!” I replied & a couple of phone calls later, we were planning a trip to the Big Apple to see our work on a Broadway stage.

Sadly Michelle could not join us but Jada, Joe’s wife accompanied us & we had a great time.  Met up with Peter & Andrew for drinks & discussion about the show & the technical aspects of how our work was interlaced with the live action sets, orchestra & actors.  Then we walked over to the Marquis Theatre & met many of the production staff who gave us great compliments on our work.

The show was real funny, had some great numbers & I tell you if you close your eyes & just listened to Megan Hilty’s version of Dolly Parton, you would think Dolly herself was on stage.  Allison Janney owned her part & Stephanie Block made the naive divorcee cliché stand on its end.  Marc Kudisch was so much like Mr. Hart that the audience could feel women’s lib flying out the window.  The best, in my opinion was Roz’s solo act.  If you get a chance to be in New York, check out the show.

9to5, the Musical

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Illum Productions has been awarded an animation project collaborating with Peter Nigrini Design Studios, out of New York, for the Broadway production “9 to 5 the Musical” based off of the 80’s movie.

Peter’s body of work covers a number of disciplines in the theatre.  A few of his video designs include: Jean Genet’s Elle produced as the inaugural production of The Art Party starring Alan Cumming, the Tony award nominated, Say Goodnight Gracie at the Helen Hayes Theatre & the World Premier of Charles Wuorinen’s Adaptation of the Salman Rushdie novella, Haroun and the Sea of Stories.  In addition to his work as a video designer, Peter occasionally designs in other media for the theatre such as scenery for the Lincoln Center Theater/Lincoln Center Festival Production of Chen Shi-Zheng’s Orphan of Zhao.

We will be animating the fantasy sequence of Violet Newstead, played by Allison Janney of West Wing, whom day-dreams that she is Snow White singing to the bluebirds & demolishing the dark castle of her boss, the evil Franklin Hart Jr.

Joe Merideth, our animation director stated, “This was a true collaboration and a great opportunity to explore a different kind of venue for animation.  I haven’t seen too many live performances with an animation element so it was an exciting and welcomed challenge.”

We were asked to create a style related to old Disney movies of the 40’s as well as feel of animation reminiscent of early Looney Toon cartoons.  The castle was created in CG but textured to match that of the concept hand painted art so it had a 2D hand painted feel to the final rendered frames.  Jerry, our Creative Director, said, “We went for a Chuck Jones style animation to the castle, so instead of dramatically shattering the castle upon destruction, we simply popped a couple components off of it to simulate the same approach that Franklin Hart was going through in the play.  A male stroked elimination of his personal ego in a comical way.”

The theatre performances will open in California at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles before heading to New York, April 23, 2009, at the Marriott Marquis Theatre (1535 Broadway).

The Black Shield

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Illum’s Animation Director, Joe Merideth, has been chosen to work on an independent film titled “The Black Shield”.  This is the story of an ordinary man struggling with everyday issues, his family and his work as a comic book writer and illustrator. Through this he ponders the question - does an individual truly have the power to change the world?  To even change his?  The film beautifully blends animation and live action, and speaks to what we might want to be able to do, if we could.  A personal film that takes a wider viewpoint of the world, and what may possibly lie untapped inside us all.

The animation section presents the alternative world where Warren (the Black Shield) struggles with who he is and his true role in life. While working on the comic book that he hopes will help shed light on his dilemma Warren falls asleep in his studio and his comic comes to life in a dream sequence.  The sequence takes place in a hall of knowledge where other superheroes go for answers to a variety of moral, ethical and other life questions.  There, a wise man helps The Black Shield to understand where he must look to find the answers to his questions.

The Black Shield leaves the hall and enters onto a train which references other train images in the live-action portion of the film and a point in Warrens own history that he must find closure with.

Illum Productions will be creating the CG subway train system that will blend with the traditionally animated characters.  “We love these kinds of projects where we can collaborate creatively with different methodologies to bring an artistic vision to life and create an amazing world of imagination and possibilities,” comments Jerry Chambless, Creative Director.
